About Barnes Industries
HISTORY OF BARNES INDUSTRIES
“It is Barnes Industries' objective to continuously improve the quality of our products and on-time deliveries to better satisfy the needs and expectations of our customers. We are also committed to continually improving all areas of our operations through employee development and involvement.”
Barnes Industries was founded in 1969. It is the first and only ball screw manufacturing plant devoted to reconditioning ball-bearing lead screws and producing new ball screws with a warranty for all services. "Barnes" has grown from a one-man, 1000 sq. ft. shop to more than 50 people and an excess of 62,500 sq. ft. of floor space. The facility consists of 48,000 sq. ft. of environmentally controlled space devoted solely to manufacturing. The balance of space is used for engineering, sales, administration and accounting.
Glenn R. Barnes Sr., Founder February 17, 1924 – September 11, 2010
Glenn Barnes, originally from the farm country of western Kentucky, served as a Machinist Mate on a submarine in the South Pacific during World War II. He moved to Detroit in the late 1940's and began his machining career in various machine shops. Thread grinding became his trade of choice and by the mid 1960's he started Barnes Tool & Engineering, grinding taps, hobs and lead screws. Within a few years, Barnes Tool & Engineering was bought by a fledgling ball screw manufacturer. Glenn was not content working for someone else and longed to operate his own enterprise once again, so in 1969 Barnes Industries was founded with the same product line of taps, hobs and lead screws. As the trend toward CNC machining grew in the 1970's, he became aware of the need to service the ball bearing lead screw component of the CNC machine. He set out to produce and service the highest quality ball screw in the industry with the shortest possible delivery. As history shows, he succeeded and Barnes Industries has earned the reputation of being the world leader in the ball screw service industry for many years. Machine tool manufactures and end users alike have come to know and depend on Barnes quality and delivery.
It is with great honor that we say good-bye to this pioneer of the ball screw service industry. He was truly an amazing entrepreneur, engineer, businessman, and friend. He will be remembered most for his ability to lead by strong words and a stronger example.
